The Bible is a book of wisdom for life. In fact, one Biblical author wrote these words

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 1:1-2

The Bible has much to say on the topic of money. But we want to highlight a few important principles which may be helpful to you today.
Principle 1: Love God and People, Not Money

Do you recognize this scripture?

“Money is a root of all kinds of evil.”

Well, that is how many people misquote a teaching from the Bible. Let’s look at the scripture and see what it really says.

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” 1 Timothy 6:10a

Many believe money itself is evil. The truth is, the love of money is what we need to be concerned about.

Do you love money? Is money more important to you than people? Is your time consumed with thoughts about money? If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, take some time to reflect. Why do you care so much about money, and what are you going to do to change?
Principle 2: Beware of Debt

“The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.” Proverbs 22:7

If you owe money, does it bring you a sense of relief or burden?

Borrowing money can be dangerous. If you can’t make a payment, you might owe a penalty. Miss enough payments and you may be called into court. In other words, you are a slave to the lender.

What is the solution? Pay off your debt. You only need one master, and that master ought to be God.
Principle 3: Pay Your Taxes

One day some men tried to trick Jesus. They asked him if it was right to pay taxes. They wanted Jesus to say something incriminating. Instead, Jesus replied wisely:

“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Mark 12:17

Jesus knew the Roman government was oppressive and often without justice. Yet he advised those in earshot to pay taxes. You should do the same.
Principle 4: Give Generously

“Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God that he has given you.” Deuteronomy 16:17

God instructs us to give generously. And the Bible is filled with examples of people who gave, even when they had little. Remember the widow who gave to Elijah? (1 Kings 17:7-16) Or the woman who gave less than a penny? (Mark 12:41-44)

The world tempts us to hoard money or to spend it all on ourselves. But scripture teaches us to be generous by giving to those who are in need.

The Bible has much more to say about money. The Bible also has much to say about marriage, family, children, work, and relationships. God’s Word is filled with truth which paves a way for us.
